Ancient Egyptian Crafts

Egypt's craftsmen produced statues, amulets and various other items from many material. Craftsmen of ancient Egypt were usually trained and skilled workers. They were often well respected in the community and had a comfortable life. However, each artisan lifestyle and social status depends on the quality of their skills and experience. Thus, some craftsmen had harder lives than others. Most craftsmen worked in workshops with other artisans.  

Objects or temples of Pharaoh were made in the workshops of the temple or palace workshops. Objects for ordinary people has been made by local artisans in small workshops. As for the painting, the ancient Egyptians used mainly minerals from their desert environment. They crushed stones on various minerals and adds a binding agent, usually animal glue or a gum plant before applying it to the surface.

In ancient Egypt arts and crafts served one purpose: to Pharaoh. And Pharaoh served one purpose: to ensure that the Nile overflowed its banks annually flood the soil, fertilize crops to increase. Pharaoh has accomplished this by observing certain religious practices and rituals and sacrifices in honor of the gods of Egypt and win their favor to give Pharaoh and his people's lives. Sculptures and statues all served a purpose, of course, there was no such thing as having "art for art" at the time.  

The bas-reliefs, such as paints, were stories and incantations - all for religious reasons. The statues were houses for the departed souls. This is also why the ancient Egyptians were ritual offerings to the statues. Ancient Egyptian art was rather the work of artisans who have been trained paid and then worked as part of a team. The leading master craftsman could be very versatile and able to work in many branches of art, but its share in the production of a statue or decorate a tomb was anonymous.  

He will guide his assistants as they worked, and help train novices, but his personal contribution can not be evaluated. Artists at all stages of their business worked together. The sketches initial sketch or drawing would be executed by one or more, which would then be followed by other sculpt intermediate and final stages.


 The Egyptians excelled in stone work, painting and metal work. They could reap huge granite columns and obelisks of rock using techniques very inventive and very primitive. Ancient arts and crafts Egyptian remained virtually unchanged over the next thousand years, until the conquest of Greek and Roman Egypt when the occupants began using artisans for their own purposes and less for system Pharaonic art for the state.
